Circumnavigate Thatcher Rock

The SWIM ADVENTURE circumnavigating THATCHER ROCK is an iconic and adrenaline fuelled swim.  An extreme swim which demands and deserves respect. It is a tidal 3.5km, that said, it normally feels like 5km due to, at times, having the flow of water against you.

The route begins at Meadfoot beach, by the Café, diving centre and toilets (there is a pay and display carpark at the other end of the beach, about ten-minute walk but also street parking nearer by).  We will meet you at the top of the slipway where we will do a short safety briefing and route plan.  We then head down the slip to stow on the boat’s your small essentials such as flip flops and drinks.

The swim takes a bee-line for THATCHER ROCK, heading slightly to the mainland side.  Everything is big so it looks close but really Thatcher rock is a mile away.  The stretch of water between the mainland and the rock is called THE GUT and known for its fast flowing water (which can only be with us, or against us on this swim).  You go around the rock in a clockwise direction, through the lull of the tide and back through a strong current on the other side.

Everything is big and dramatic.  With all the things you are experiencing this swim is a real adrenaline adventure.  Stronger swimmers may want to also go around SHAG ROCK before heading back into the beach, just below the café where we first met.

After completing this amazing swim everyone will be offered a warm drink.  Sometimes swimmers like to get changed and go to the café to chat through their individual experiences.
